Strength in Numbers - Passing Along Well-Wishes

Fri, 07/09/2010 - 3:13pm

Is there strength in numbers? In community? What if a large group (diverse and non-unified) seeks to serve as a group sending out specific thoughts or well-wishes? How would we measure success?

I'm not sure there is an answer to any of these questions. Surely the science of group actions is not an exact science. But I was thinking: Is today's internet and the acts of some on social networks to create a community acting together or sending out good thought and well-wishes a deed of good, or simply a cacophony of many numbers?

My first reaction is simple - if nothing else, numbers (friends, caring individual individuals, caring community and safety net members) seem to bring a sense of belonging and inclusion - and that's good, right? Even individual well-wishes delivered in a caring manner represents good.

I read where one of my favorite singers, Pheobe Snow, had suffered a disablitating hemorrhagic stroke this year. Unable to type or communite directly with many, Pheobe's manager has set up a Facebook page to provide regular updates on Pheobe's condition.

Thousands of well-wishers and friends have interacted with the Facebook page, (or directly by email) sending along prayers, good thoughts, and positive comments - and I can't help but think this is uplifting and helps Pheobe (and those in need) to know of the support and caring that surrounds her (them). In fact, I was able to check directly and was told Pheobe just can't beleive the positive outpouring, and it seems to have motivated her to keep up the fight for recovery.

That's not science, but it brings a smile to my face - and I hope, yours too. So, if a loved one is in trouble, needs positive energy, good thoughts or well-wishes, consider putting the word out to others so they can show their interest and support - I'm always going to believe there's great healing powers (and strength) in numbers. Afterall, isn't that just being part of someone's extended Personal Safety Net?!
