Another Great Idea: A Tool Library!
Did you read about the new TOOL LIBRARY in West Seattle? Are you daunted by having a yard, but needing too many tools to care for it? Well, this may be just your answer? Though we love our hardware stores and nurseries, we're glad to say there'll be an alternative to more purchasing of items needed in the yard. The new tool-lending library will be opening this Saturday, June 12th at 9 AM. Metro routes are available on the website.
With $20,000 from the Department of Neighborhoods' Neighborhood Matching Fund, hundreds of tools from community organizations and members, Sustainable Seattle's efforts are blooming. Partnerships with organizations such as the West Seattle Nursery and Community Harvest of South Seattle are boosting community awareness.
No, each of us does NOT need to own our own rakes, wheelbarrows, or such. There's now going to be a low-cost, green alternative. The Tool Library will be located at the South Seattle Community College Garden Center, at the north end of the campus at 6000 16th Ave SW.
I hope there'll be folks there to show me how to use some of the new devices I may find I want to try. Most likely, as those aligned with this cool concept get involved with various community projects - whether they be park restorations or backyard gardening where neighbors pitch in: today my patio, next week yours - there will be lots of education and support. I can see a vision of the yard I just might have, if only I had the right tools!
This is an excellent addition to many people's Personal Safety Net, and is one of many such tool-lending libraries around the world.
Hours: 9 AM - 2 PM Saturdays, and 4 PM - 8 PM on Thursdays.
